We are NOT Criminals: Keeping Marginalized Students Safe

Gillian Mendoza, Karencia Mitchell, Eugena Pierre-Paul, Ayisha Green, Elise Jayakar, MSW - The Youth Activist-Youth Allies (YA-YA) Network
Saturday 7/13/2019 - 2:15pm to 3:45pm - Room: Carlson L-132
Approximately 100,000 students are scanned every day by metal detectors in New York City, perpetuating the school-to-prison pipeline. We want metal detectors out of schools! Due to the political climate and persistent criminalization of students of color, youth activists have pushed to make political change in NYC. This workshop examines student rights, the school-to-prison pipeline, and oppressive perceptions of safety. Students, teachers, and parents who participate will experience first-hand how to create change in their education communities through community organizing.
