Sure, “Coffee Will Make You Black” by April Sinclair tells the story of a young African American woman struggling with her first crush and an embarrassing mom. But dig a little deeper and you have the perfect coming of age story for exploring Paulo Freire’s concepts of prescription, fear of freedom and liberation. In this workshop teachers explore how to engage middle or high school students in a Freirian analysis of a young adult book.
