Julia Cuneo
Detroit Independent Freedom Schools
Saturday, 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm -- Maryland 242

This panel will explore the recent history and challenges of youth directed organizing in Detroit, a city where public schooling has been nearly dismantled by charters, closures, and Emergency Management. Detroit youth will share how these realities have generated a massive resistance movement, the Detroit Independent Freedom Schools, which reimagines education from the bottom up. Finally, we will discuss how Detroit grassroots organizing can provide lessons for fighting the DeVoses as they take their Detroit strategies nation wide.
