Participants will explore the use of song lyrics to deepen students’ understanding about Black liberation. Teacher/activists will identify media literacy tools for engaging in critical dialogue to address resilience, history and community empowerment. This workshop unpacks difficult topics related to discrimination, state violence, resistance and activism while creating community around songs that speak to the Black American experience. Evocative lyrics ranging from “Strange Fruit” to “Songs for Assata” can serve as lessons of history and the harmony for liberation.
